General Notes: Husband - Irving H. Cottom
He was raised on a farm, and received his education in the common schools. At the close of his school days he engaged in farming at home, and in 1861 removed to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he remained four years. In 1865 he bought his own farm, containing 115 acres of fine land, situated two miles north of Dawson, on the Connellsville and Perryopolis road.
He was s a stanch democrat, and served as supervisor of roads and assessor. He was a member and class-leader of the Methodist Episcopal church.
He never left the home farm, although all of his siblings did. Some years before his father's death he bought the home farm. In 1862, after his marriage, he went to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where for three years he cultivated the farm owned by his father-in-law. In 1865 he returned to the old homestead. He was rejected by the medical examiner for admission to the army, and continued the life of a farmer until 1890, when he sold the homestead (reserving the coal rights) and retired to Uniontown, purchasing a dwelling and three acres of land on West Connellsville street. He was a Democrat in politics, and served as supervisor, assessor and in other township offices. At the age of seventeen years he joined the Methodist Episcopal church.
