General Notes: Husband - Alva Walter Cottom
He was educated in the public school, and remained on the home farm until October 18, 1884, when he came to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where for one year he worked at the butcher business with G. A. McCormick. He then returned to the farm, remaining two years until September, 1887. From that date until May, 1888, he was proprietor of a meat market at Dawson, Pennsylvania, then selling out. From July, 1888, until June, 1898, he was manager of the meat department for James Cochran Sons & Company at Vanderbilt, Pennsylvania. On June 13, 1898, he entered the employ of Armour & Company as traveling salesman, representing that company in the Uniontown district. He was also interested in coal lands and mines in West Virginia and Pennsylvania; was a director of the Round Bottom Coal & Coke Company, the Ohio River & Great Lakes Coal Company and interested in other companies with which he had no official connection. He also had real estate holdings in Uniontown and in other parts of Fayette County. In politics he was a Democrat, but never sought public office. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum, the Protected Home Circle, and with his wife belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church. He was a prominent Mason\emdash a thirty-second degree member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, also belonged to lodge, chapter and commandery of the York Rite, and was a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, affiliated with Syria Temple, Pittsburgh.
