General Notes: Husband - John Cowden
He followed farming all his life. He was an active Whig, and in church connection he and his wife were members of the U. P. Seceder Church at Hickory, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
He "was twice bitten by a copperhead snake. The first time upon the heel while plowing. The second time upon the hand while binding a sheaf in the harvest field. The first time the remedy was whiskey and fresh milk. The whiskey was obtained from a neighbor. Miss Harriet Denny, of Canonsburg, whose father was a tenant upon the Cowden farm, said to me when she was quite aged, that she could recall the day distinctly and that it was the only time Mr. Cowden was known to tolerate liquor upon the place. His position in the church and the manner of his father's death had established him in positive temperance views. He was an advocate of total abstinence greatly in advance of his time. Upon the second occasion the cure that was made use of was to bind a hot roasted onion upon the wounded hand. It may have been more painful than the other remedy but its moral influence was better."
