General Notes: Husband - Aaron Wright Patchin

He was born at Lake George, New York, and came to Burnside township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, in 1845. He lived with his father on the old homestead until his marriage, but never left the old homestead, taking charge of the extensive lumber interests of his father.

He was born at Lake George, New York, and obtained his education in the common schools. His business training was ample, and was received under the direction of his father. When about twelve years of age he began driving a team, and aided in the work of the farm and the lumber mills. He came with the family to Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, in 1845, and for ten years was his father's assistant in business, after which he became a part owner in the lumber and mercantile enterprises. He came to own several thousand acres of land accessible to the river in Clearfield and adjoining counties. He carried on the lumber trade in all departments, from the time the trees were cut in the forest. He rafted the logs down the river and to New York, also operated sawmills and manufactured lumber. He was thoroughly familiar with the business in every branch, and his management resulted in large returns. In 1873 he formed a connection with an extensive manufacturing company at Camden, N. J., which took contracts for ship timbers and all ship supplies, masts, spars, etc. At the time of his death he owned the entire plant.
He died very suddenly from a stroke of paralysis or apoplexy. [CBRCP-CCJC, 565]

He was brought up to the lumber business in the vicinity of Lake George, New York (his father's former residence), near the foot-hills of the famous Adirondacks, and here his early life was spent, when, in 1847, he followed his father and came to the "Upper" Susquehanna. He, with other brothers, engaged extensively in the lumber business, a part of the time under the firm name and style of John Patchin & Sons. Upon the death of the father, Aaron, who seems to have been his father's chief assistant and advisor during life, acquired most of his father's real estate, having fully compensated the other heirs for their interests, and by him the vast business was successfully continued. He also was one of the executors of his father's will, his co-executor being Jackson Patchin. The extent of the lands acquired by our subject, upon his father's death, numbered some thousands of acres, but in enlarging his lumbering interests he purchased other lands, and came to own several thousands of acres scattered about in various localities, and much greater in amount than that originally given him. He, too, became the owner of the mercantile business, at Patchinville, which he continued, this being the only store in the immediate vicinity. He was also the owner of the extensive saw-mill at that place. During the month of April, 1887, Mr. Patchin established an extensive works at Camden, New Jersey, for the manufacture of spars, the material therefor being cut from his lands in Clearfield County. At the same place he also had a lumber saw-mill.
He was not in any sense a public man; he had neither the disposition nor the time to indulge in the worry of political life, although frequently pressed to become the candidate of his party\emdash the Republican; he sought no office.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Barrett

Before her marriage she was engaged in teaching school in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Later she resided at Patchinville, where she held the office of postmistress, the post office there having been in charge of the Patchin family for over 75 years, she having held it for at least thirty-three years. She was a member of the Baptist church.
