He was educated in the local public schools and at Edinburgh Academy. He later taught school in Ligonier township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, for a term or two, and then entered the employ of a Mr. Jackson, who conducted a general store at Moshannon Mines, Clearfield County. Here he worked as a clerk for a short time, and here his premature death occurred, when in his twenty-fifth year. He was a Republican in politics, and a prominent and active member of the United Brethren church, where he was for some time the superintendent of Sunday school.
