His father emigrated to America from Ireland.
His parents lived in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and moved to Westmoreland County, settling at Pleasant Unity, when he was a small boy. He was a farmer by occupation. He was a supporter of the Republican party from its organization, and in religious matters affiliated with the Presbyterians.
He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was just an infant when brought by his parents to Westmoreland County. Here he passed practically his entire life and died at the advanced age of eighty-six. He taught school for a few winters during his early manhood, but later on became the possessor of a large estate in Salem township, where he carried on general farming operations.
He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and for a time engaged in teaching in the schools of Unity township, Westmoreland County. After his marriage he resided on his father-in-law's farm, and later spent a few years in Armstrong County, after which he returned to the farm. Later he was employed on the Bicrer [sic, Bierer?] farm on which was later situated works No. 2 of the Jamison Coal Company.
