He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and was a young man when the family moved to Westmoreland County. He had been educated in public schools, and on reaching manhood chose to devote himself to agricultural pursuits. Until his marriage he remained on the home farm and then removed to land of his own in the same township. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
