General Notes: Husband - James Hudson

He was a descendant of James Hudson, a native of Wales, who emigrated to the United States, locating in Chester county, Pennsylvania.

He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In early manhood he learned the trade of carpenter. He resided for some time in Lancaster County, and about 1816 removed to Westmoreland County, locating on a small farm of about forty acres, which he purchased in Unity township, near Pleasant Unity, where he lived for about twenty-five years. He then purchased a farm of about one hundred acres near Crabtree, residing there until four or five years prior to his death, when he removed to Allegheny township. He was independent in politics. He died when he was about eighty-four years of age. [HWC 1906 ii, 41]

He was reared in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, married there, and in the early part of the nineteenth century brought his family to Westmoreland County, making the journey by wagon. Here he was engaged principally at the carpenter's trade, taking contracts for houses and various other buildings, and also speculated quite successfully in land. He bought land in the Crab Tree Bottom for seven dollars an acre, the coal on which soon became worth five hundred dollars an acre. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and a Whig in politics. He lived to the age of seventy-eight years, his death being caused by cancer on the hand. [HAC 1914, 415]

He came originally from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and made the journey westward across the mountains with his family. He settled on a farm in Unity township, Westmoreland County, on the site of the present village of Pleasant Unity, and here he purchased considerable property which he cleared and cultivated, and whereon he engaged in agricultural operations. He also followed the trade of carpenter, one of the first buildings which he worked upon after his arrival being the old Null House in Greensburg. He lived to be nearly ninety years of age. and continued a surprising amount of activity to the end. He was a Democrat in his political faith, and a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church.
