General Notes: Husband - John Calvin Smith

His education was received in the Fort Palmer district schools, supplemented by one term at the West Fairfield Summer School. It was the choice of the young man, on arriving at the time when it became his right to enter upon an independent career, to make the homestead his life-long dwelling-place and to devote himself to the cultivation of his ancestral acres: one hundred and eighty-seven acres, nearly all cleared. To stock-raising, also, Mr. Smith gave special attention and later in life, after he relinquished the active labors of a farmer's life and employed an agent to cultivate the estate, he bestowed his personal supervision upon the care and breeding of the stock.
In 1918 he retired from the farm and removed to Ligonier, where he built a fine residence on Vincent street. To the support of Republican principles, Mr. Smith gave his vote, and served as school director. His vote, however, is generally cast for the candidate he considered best deserving of support regardless of party. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church of West Fairfield, actively participating in its work and for many years filled the office of elder. He was elected assistant superintendent of the Sabbath school shortly after removing to Ligonier.
