General Notes: Husband - Robert Smith

He was born in Fairfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and educated in the old subscription schools. After his death the old farm was tenanted by the youngest son, but was later sold to William Robb. Robert Smith lived at what was called Old Fort Palmer School House. He bought the old George Taylor farm of about one hundred and twenty acres and subsequently purchased an adjoining tract of fifty-six acres. He cleared a large portion of this and all his life devoted himself to general farming. On his land was a coal bank and he burned coke in his own fields, selling it to the iron foundries in the neighborhood. He also had on his farm a limestone quarry and burned lime in his fields in the old way. Being the possessor of one of the old-style tumbling shaft threshing machines, he was in the habit of threshing his neighbors' crops for them. Later he bought a separator which was operated by horse-power, and his death occurred shortly after steam threshers were invented. Prior to the advent of railroads Mr. Smith drove a team on the old road between Pittsburgh and Baltimore, delivering goods for merchants in both directions.
He and his family were members of the United Presbyterian church in which for many years he served as ruling elder.
