General Notes: Husband - Joseph Schettler

During the period of the civil war he was drafted for service twice, but each time sent a substitute. He was engaged in farming and stock raising in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, until 1892, and in that year he engaged in the hotel business, conducting up-to-date hostleries in different cities of the state. He disposed of his farm in 1907. He supported the Democratic party and held a number of important township offices. He was a member of the Roman Catholic church.

He was educated in the public schools and worked on the farm until he was a grown man. He then was employed in the rolling mills at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and on returning home worked with his father on the home farm. After the death of the latter he bought out the heirs and became sole owner of the home farm which he cultivated for eight years. He then moved to New Athens, Clarion County, where he ran a hotel for one year. Then he built a hotel at Lucinda Furnace, which he opened for business in 1872. He continued as proprietor for about twelve years, at the end of which time he sold out to his son-in-law and returned to farming. After spending eight years in farming he bought the "Eiseman House" at Fryburg, of which he was proprietor until 1896, when he sold out. He then purchased a hotel property in Edenburg, later known as the "Knox Inn," rebuilt, enlarged and ran it as the "Schettler Hotel" for three years, when he sold it. He then moved to Franklin, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in the oil business as an operator for some time, later becoming proprietor of the "Commercial Hotel" in Oil City for three years. Then he removed to Cleveland, Ohio, and rented and ran a hotel there for three years. In 1903 he purchased a hotel in Leeper, Pennsylvania, and in association with his son, William A. Schettler, continued one year, at the end of which time he sold the hotel to his son, and in 1904 came to Knox, Clarion County, and bought the "Edenburg House," a prosperous house of nineteen rooms. Mr. Schettler was a Democrat in politics and while living at Lucinda Furnace served as constable and collector of taxes. Both he and his wife were members of the Roman Catholic church.
