He was educated in the public schools at Fryburg, Pennsylvania, and in the high school at Oil City. After completing his educational training he returned to his father's farm where he remained for the ensuing five years, at the end of which time, in 1907, he came to Shippensville, there engaging in the hotel business as proprietor of the Upper Hotel. In 1911 he purchased the Central House. In politics Mr. Schettler supported the Democratic party, in the local councils of which he was a most active factor. In 1910-11 he was a member of the city council.
