While still scarcely more than a lad he enlisted in Company D, Twelfth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served for two years and six months in the Civil War. He was a man of an extremely enterprising nature, and after the close of that struggle went still further West and eventually made his home at Batson, Hardin County, Texas, where he was engaged in the oil business, to which he devoted his energies during the major part of his life.
