This family had its origin in Scotland, but has made its home and been most closely identified with the life of America since pre-Revolutionary days.

His father came from abroad and settled in America, where he chose a home in Lawrence
County, Pennsylvania, while that region was still practically the frontier.

He was born on the old family homestead and all his life was a farmer there.
