He was educated in the schools of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a cooper by trade, and spent his younger days in Ligonier Valley, where he had a cooper shop near Mechanicsburg. His death occurred at the age of eighty-two years.
He was a Republican in politics, and he and his wife were members of the United Brethren church.
