He was born on the old Joseph Matthew farm, and was educated in the local schools. At an early age he learned the trade of wagonmaker at Pleasant Unity, Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and afterwards built a shop at Laughlinstown, in the Ligonier Valley, where he carried on his trade all his life. He prospered highly and employed for a number of years as many as five men in his shop.
He was a Republican in politics, and supervisor of the county for a time. He died at the age of sixty-nine years.
