General Notes: Husband - Nicholas King

Salem Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA

He was born in Germany, and came to America at the age of seven years with an uncle. They settled in Butler County, Pennsylvania, and while still a lad Mr. King drove the canal horse on the old Conemaugh canal. He worked for the firm of McBride & Snodgrass as an engineer, hauling cars in the tunnel up the Allegheny mountains. By the time he had reached man's estate, he had laid by a small capital with which he bought land in Loyalhanna township, Westmoreland County. This land was at the time covered with a growth of timber, which he cleared, and constructed buildings on the property.
About the year 1865 [?] he and his wife removed to Ashland County, Ohio, where they remained for about eleven years, and in 1866 [sic] returned to Westmoreland County and secured a farm. This property was originally the old Frederick Ammon farm, who built the old stone house, still standing there in 1918, in the year 1812. He also constructed a barn and other farm buildings, but these were afterwards replaced with new ones by Mr. King. and he conducted there a large stock farm. He never attempted to enter politics or public affairs of any kind, though a staunch supporter of the Democratic party. He was a Lutheran in his religious belief and attended the church of that denomination at Delmont.
