General Notes: Husband - Elias Berlin King

a native of Ashland county, Ohio. He came to Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, with his parents and continued to live with his father until he had reached the age of thirty-one years, spending that period on the farm, and becoming thoroughly familiar with that kind of work. At thirty-one years, however, he left the parental roof and was employed for a time by the Manor Gas Company at Claridge. After one year spent with this concern, he entered the services of the Claridge Coal Company, with offices at the same place, but did not stay longer than three months with the latter company. During the three years following, he worked for Mr. George Kunkle on the latter's farm and drove a team for him. About this time Mr. King was elected superintendent of a plant in Salem township, an office which he continued to fill for about twelve months. At the death of his father, whose farm was left to his children, he bought out the interest of his sisters, and began to operate the place on his own account. He sold about six acres of this property, and a little later bought forty, so that the entire property at the present time comprises about two hundred and ten acres. Here he carries on general farming on a large scale, devoting a great deal of space to the growing of potatoes. He also plants about fifty bushels of grain upon his farm each year. Sometime ago Mr. King added about twenty feet to the length of his barn in order to make it adequate to accommodate the large crops which he takes in from his farm and the equipment needed in the planting and harvesting of them. Besides his farming, he is a man of large public-spirit and has done much to serve the interests of the community, holding several important positions and taking an active part in local public affairs. He has served as township auditor for a number of years, and has for four years been a member of the school board there. He is a staunch Democrat in his politics, and is recognized as an influence in the affairs of his party in that region.
He and his family attended the Lutheran church at Delmont. Mr. King was exceedingly fond of out-door life of all kinds and during the vacations which he allowed himself, he generally visited the mountains of western Maryland for the purpose of shooting deer, finding his chief recreation in that sport.
