General Notes: Husband - James Shields
He was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, near Chambersburg, and in 1798 moved to Westmoreland County, settling four miles northeast of New Salem, in New Salem township. He bought one hundred acres of land, to which he subsequently added one hundred and twenty acres, on which he built a house.
In the year 1808, he and his wife came from Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, to Westmoreland County, on horseback and with their one child carried in a pocket hung to the saddle bow. John Shields did not live past middle age, but his widow, Elizabeth, reached the great age of more than a century, her death occurring at about the time of the close of the Civil War.
General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Wilson
She was a member of the wealthy Wilson family of near Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in whose honor Wilson College was named because a member of the family donated a large sum of money to that institution.
In 1872, she, the eldest daughter in a family of ten children, became sole heir to the extensive Wilson estate, embracing some five thousand acres of land, together with other valuable personal property.
