General Notes: Husband - Samuel Smith Porter


He came to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, from Maryland when quite young. He received a good education and engaged in teaching tor sixteen years. After the breaking out of the "Great Rebellion," he enlisted as a private in Company B, Sixteenth Regiment Volunteer Cavalry, and by successive promotions attained to the rank of second lieutenant under General Sheridan, in Second Maryland Volunteers. He participated at Gettysburg, was in several other battles and was honorably discharged September 30, 1864.
