At the age of sixteen, he commenced life for himself, having only fifty cents in his pocket. He found employment cutting timber and also as a farm hand as he was industrious and saved his earnings he finally bought a farm of seventy-one acres in Wayne Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, upon which he lived for over forty years. Later, he lived retired at Cochranton.
