Of Scotch ancestry. He was by trade a stonemason, and in 1837 came to America on a sailing vessel which took six weeks to cross the ocean. He was accompanied by his wife and child and they settled at Meadville, PA, where he worked at his trade. He died there ten years later at the age of twenty-nine.
