General Notes: Husband - John C. Pearce
He learned the mercantile business with James Stewart, of New Alexandria, Pennsylvania, and also taught school several years. From 1847 to 1850 he clerked for Joseph Cook at Livermore, and from 1850 to 1869 he was connected with Thomas G. Stewart, later of Baltimore, in the general trade at Livermore, under the name and style of Stewart & Co. In 1869 he removed to Saltsburg, Indiana County, and became a member of the firm of Stewart (J. M.) & Pearce, which changed to J. M. Stewart & Co. in 1876, John W. Robinson becoming a member of the firm.
He was reared on a farm, educated in the common schools, and taught several terms of school. He was later employed as a clerk at New Alexandria and Livermore, Pennsylvania, and became a member of the mercantile firm of Thomas G. Stewart & Co., of Livermore. In 1870 he removed to Saltsburg, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, became a member of the mercantile firm of Stewart & Pearce, which continued until 1878, when Mr. Pearce withdrew and engaged in his own clothing business at that place. He was a strong republican, was a friend of Hon. John Covode and a warm supporter of Judge Harry White. He was an active worker in the Methodist Episcopal church.
He was born in Delmont, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a clothing merchant in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, for many years before his death. He and his family were members of the Methodist church.
