General Notes: Husband - John Henderson
He was probably the first child born in Worth twp. and it was said that he was the second child born in Mercer County, PA. On his marriage his father gave him the old farm of his grandfather, Robert Henderson. This farm was rather hilly and in order to distinguish him from other John Hendersons he was dubbed "Mountain John." They continued to reside there until 1857 when the farm was sold to "Governor" Arch. Henderson for $1,500 and they removed to a farm near Rushville, IN. During the fall of 1860 they removed to Osceola, IA, where a farm was purchased six miles west of that place in Ward twp. The farm consisted of 80 acres of prairie land on which was a log house built of black walnut logs, which was replaced by a frame building in 1876. The black walnut logs were then used as the back wall of a cattle shed and were later sold at a good price when black walnut lumber for furniture was in vogue. John became a well-to-do farmer and added to his acres. John and Hannah were very devout Christians, holding daily worship in their home. Every Sunday, rain or shine, they with their children drove about four miles northeast from their home to the "White Church" (so-called because it was painted white) for worship. The farm chores and work about the farm ceased before sundown Saturday evening and only such feeding of the stock as was necessary was performed on Sunday. The cooking was done on Saturday for the Sunday meals. Quiet reigned from before sundown Saturday until Sunday after sundown. Visitors were always welcome except on Sunday-that was a day for worship for them. Their children, when older, used to say that they almost hated to see Sunday come, but in spite of this strict religious discipline, they grew up and lived devout Christian lives.
John was about six feet tall and weighed about 160 to 170 pounds. He was a solemn faced, taciturn man. One of his nephews said he had never seen his Uncle John smile but once and that was on the occasion of his visit with Uncle Archie to John in Iowa about 1866.
General Notes: Wife - Hannah Gilliland
She was a large woman of strong will, fine character and a devoted Christian mother. When the family left Pennsylvania for the west they took Hannah's loom with them and the products of the loom helped tide over the early lean years of their life in a frontier state.
