General Notes: Husband - James Gilliland Henderson
He was educated in common schools and was quite proficient in arithmetic, advancing to the "double rule of three" which was some accomplishment then. When a young man he was apprenticed to a Mr. Ball, a carpenter and cabinet maker. He lived with this family for seven years or until he had served his term of apprenticeship. He removed with his father's family to Rushville, IN, in 1857, where they remained until 1860, then removing to Osceola, Clarke County, IA, where they arrived late in the fall of 1860. His father purchased a farm six miles west of Osceola, in Ward Twp.
In 1872 he removed to Murray, IA, a small town about four miles west of the home farm, where he followed his trade until 1879 when he removed to Lincoln, NE, where he and his family resided for about six months and then moved to Seward, NE. They were members of the Presbyterian Church, but on removing to Seward and there being no church of that denomination, they united with the Methodist Church. He was a Republican but never held a public office, and was radically opposed to secret orders. He was a tall, slender man, six feet one and one-half inches in height, weighing about 165 pounds with black, bushy hair, and wore short chin whiskers for years.
