General Notes: Husband - Joseph Adams Henderson
He was educated in the public schools and was proficient in the "three R's" of that period and especially in spelling, probably as a result of many "spelling bees" prevalent in the schools of that period. He removed with his father's family to Indiana in 1857 where they resided until 1860 when they decided to go farther west and located on a farm six miles west of Osceola, IA, in Ward Twp., Clarke County, on which he lived 52 years. He was a man of large stature, six feet two inches in height and weighing 200 pounds. Of great strength, he, as a young man in Pennsylvania, revelled in the barn and house raisings as well as wood chopping contests of the early days in the Hendersonville neighborhood. On August 9, 1862, at the age of 25 years, he enlisted in Co. D, 39th Infantry, IA Vols. He was mustered out June 6, 1865, at Washington, D. C. He went through three years of war and never used coffee or liquor and was not ill during that time. His regiment served with Sherman and made that famous march from Atlanta to the Sea. He served as Trustee of Ward Twp. for 24 years and was a school director for many years. He also attended many Republican county and state conventions, usually as a delegate. He was a member of the Osceola Post, G. A. R.
