He was born in South Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where his boyhood was passed. On reaching manhood he engaged in farming and also followed the trade of a shoemaker. He was quiet and unassuming in disposition, but firm in his convictions.

He was a native of East Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he lived all of his life on a farm. [BPCFC, 348]
