He received a limited education, opened a meat market in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, bought his first stock on credit, and had to dispose of the same before he could pay for it, but by industry and economy he accumulated a large estate, owning several large farms and an extensive acreage in coal lands.

He was one of the largest landowners and wealthiest citizens of Fayette County.
