General Notes: Husband - Patrick Ryan Burke

He lived in Brooklyn, New York, until fourteen years of age, and attended a private school in that city. In 1862 he removed with his mother to Cleveland, Ohio, and there entered St. Mary's College, where he remained until the spring of 1866. In June of that year he located at Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and engaged as a pumper at Coal City. In the spring of 1873 he settled at Karns City, where he accepted the position of book-keeper with the lumber firm of Rogers & Allen, with whom he remained until May 14, 1875, when he embarked in the mercantile business in that borough, as a partner with H. P. Meclimans. In September, 1875, Mr. Burke became sole proprietor and conducted the business until 1888, in which year he retired because of ill health. He afterwards devoted his entire attention to his oil interests in Butler and McKean counties, and was the owner of two producing farms in Fairview township.

He lived in Brooklyn, New York, until 1862, and received his education in a private school there. He also attended St. Mary's College in Cleveland, Ohio, where his mother located after her husband's death. In June, 1866, Mr. Burke went to Franklin, Pennsylvania, and spent some time in the coal mines of Venango County. In 1873 he settled at Karns City, where he accepted a position with the lumber firm of Rogers & Allen, as bookkeeper, with whom he was identified until May 14, 1875. He then embarked in the mercantile business for himself at Karns City, and was associated in partnership with H. P. Meclimans. Shortly afterward Mr. Burke became sole owner of the business, which he conducted in a highly successful manner until his retirement in 1888. Mr. Burke had extensive coal and oil interests in this section of the state and until his death was a prominent oil producer of Butler and McKean counties.
He was a Democrat and was twice delegate to the state convention. He served as burgess of Karns City and was a member of the local school board for thirty-three years. He was one of the organizers of the local lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and served as first officer of the lodge. He was affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and served as treasurer for ten years of Lodge No. 931, Karns City. Mr. Burke was also a member of F. and A. M. No. 521; Royal Arch Chapter; Knight Templar Commandery, No. 1; thirty-second degree, Pittsburgh Consistory; and Syria Temple.
