He obtained a practical education by attendance at the public schools of his native city, and upon the completion of his studies he devoted his attention to securing a thorough knowledge of the mastery of a boat, and he became a master and pilot on the river, which proved a remunerative source of income. He was the owner of the old family homestead, which was one of the attractive places of abode in that section of the state. He was a stock-holder in the People's Bank, and a member of Aliquippa Lodge, No. 375, Free and Accepted Masons, of McKeesport, McKeesport Chapter, No. 282, Royal Arch Masons, and McKeesport Commandery, No. 86, Knights Templar. He was a Republican in politics.
