General Notes: Husband - John Smith

He was a Union soldier in the Civil War.

He removed after his marriage from Hempfield to Salem township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, after a short period spent in Owen County, Indiana. Here his wife was taken fatally ill, and at her earnest request he brought her back to her native region in order that she might see her friends. The unfortunate lady died the night following her return to her parents' home. John Smith was a carpenter by trade, and a well known figure in his community.

He married Esther Wentzel at the age of twenty-one years. She died after something less than three years of married life.
