He received his early education in township schools, afterward attending the Indiana State Normal School and then entering Washington & Jefferson College, where he graduated in the class of 1902. In 1905 he received from the dental department of the University of Pennsylvania the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. Without delay he entered upon the practice of his profession at Punxsutawney, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, remaining for three years. He then moved to Ligonier, where he then remained, acquiring a lucrative and constantly increasing patronage. In national affairs Dr. Updegraff was a Republican, but in municipal elections voted with the Independents. He was past master of Ligonier Lodge, No. 331, Free and Accepted Masons, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he held the office of secretary. He also helped to organize the Sunday school.
