General Notes: Husband - Laurence William Murphy

His schooling was begun in Madison and Toby townships, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. It was necessary for him to walk a long distance to school, often in rough weather. For one term he attended the academy at Grove City, Pennsylvania, in Mercer County. Then he attended the state normal school at Clarion, Clarion County, and he was graduated therefrom in 1894. He had already had some experience in teaching, having begun to teach in 1885 at Watson, Toby township. He taught in Madison township; was principal of the school at Salem; also principal at Fairhaven, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; and taught also in Armstrong and Clearfield counties. He later taught at Hillville, Clarion County. Meantime he cared for his farm of one hundred and seven acres, on which he made his home after his marriage. He was a Democrat, and for three years was auditor in Toby township; he was also assessor. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church.
