He was born in Virginia and came with his parents to Butler county, Pennsylvania. After reaching his majority, his father gave him 200 acres of the original tract, upon which in later years he erected a stone house where his sons William and Charles would later reside. He devoted the balance of his life to clearing and improving this farm.
