General Notes: Husband - James Clemson Whitehill

He was born in Salisbury township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1789 he came with his father's family to Centre County. He inherited a farm from his father in Nittany Valley, Center County, Pennsylvania, where he resided until 1821, when he removed to Venango (later Clarion) County and located on a farm near Edenburg and there passed the remainder of his days. He learned the trade of blacksmith, was an expert worker in iron and steel, and is said to have made the first double-bitted axe ever forged in the state. He turned out from his forge hinges by the hundreds, also nails, cranes, fire shovels, and tools of every sort. After removing to Clarion County he practically abandoned his trade and confined himself almost entirely to his farm labor. He was industrious and thrifty, and his farm was one of the best cultivated and improved in that section of the state. Both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church, and in politics he was a Whig. [GPHAV, 1043]

He was a son of James Whitehill, the immigrant; was born probably a short time before the close of the eighteenth century, in Centre County, Pennsylvania. His father seems to have settled and made his home here, and the son also owned land. In the year 1816 he came to Clarion County, and bought or took up land to the extent of about three hundred acres. He cleared up a portion of this and built a house and shop, being by trade a black-smith. He was a Whig in politics, and belonged to the Cumberland Presbyterian church. [GPHAV, 549] This article contains some differences in details from GPHAV, 1043.
