He was educated in the public schools and devoted his life to agriculture. The home farm of the Wilsons was in Franklin township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He was a large land-owner and influential citizen, holding many local offices, including justice of the peace, and also served as county commissioner. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

The source states that he served as county commissioner from 1891 to 1894. However, this contradicts the date of death given for him.
