General Notes: Husband - Capt. William A. McCoy

Having completed his school life, he began to assist in the care of the home farm, and soon became familiar with the many branches of agriculture. At the age of twenty-one years, he embarked in business for himself, buying butter and eggs in the outlying country, and selling them in Pittsburgh, an industry that he found paid well. In 1871, he enlisted in Company F, Fifteenth Pennsylvania National Guards, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Early in 1898, the regiment was called out for service in the Spanish-American War, and he, receiving a captain's commission, had command of his company. At first the regiment was stationed at Forts Sheridan and Washington, but in September, 1898, was sent to Camp Meade, Pennsylvania, and later to Athens, Georgia, where he and his comrades remained until January, 1899, when, the war being closed, the regiment was honorably discharged, and Captain McCoy returned home. Resuming the butter and egg business in 1901, the captain carried it on until 1904, when he assumed possession of the old family homestead. He had ninety acres of rich and fertile land, well improved, and furnished with a good set of buildings.
