He was educated in the public schools of Forward Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, going to school in the winter and working on his father's farm in the summer. On March 19, 1893, he entered the Wither­spoon Institute of Butler. In June, 1883, he took examination for county certificate, receiving a certificate of creditable character. He easily secured a school and began teaching in the fall of 1883, at John's School, Forward Township. In the spring he continued his studies at Witherspoon Institute, and taught during the winter of 1884. On account of the death of his father in 1885, he was kept out of school that summer, but took the examination for a profes­sional certificate, which he received in the fall of that year. He taught at his home school that winter and entered the Academy at Harmony, Pennsylvania, as assistant teacher, also taking a course in the higher branches. He taught the following winter and the next spring received a state diploma. He continued teaching at the home school until 1889, at which time he was married. In 1890 he was elected county auditor, and the same year purchased a general store at Brownsdale, was appointed postmaster, which position he held for twelve years, at which time he sold his business. In 1902 he was elected to the State Legislature and took his seat in 1903, and served on important committees such as educational and agriculture committees. He was chosen for a second term, but owing to ill health he declined. After regaining his health he removed to Butler and was appointed to the board of inspection. He resigned this position in 1916 and removed to Petrolia, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in the hardware business until 1922, when he sold out, and in the spring of 1923 became a candidate for registrar and recorder of the county. He was elected and removed to Butler in January, 1924. He was a Republican and a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Brownsville. He served in almost every capacity, as elder, trustee, superintendent of the Sabbath school, and teacher of the Bible class for ten years. He served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Tenth Sunday School District of Butler County, and for three years was its president. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Butler County Sabbath School Association for fifteen years, and served as adult county superintendent for eight years.
