General Notes: Husband - David Douthett

He was born on his father's farm in Forward township, Butler County, PA. Here he grew to manhood, but subsequently settled on the farm where his grandfather located in 1799, and in the old log cabin erected by his grandfather were born and reared his family. This building was standing as late as 1895. He followed farming until arriving at old age, then retired to Brownsdale. He was the first postmaster of Brownsdale, and was one of the early school directors of his locality. In politics, he was a Whig until the formation of the Republican party, when he became a member of that organization, and was quite an influential man in local political matters. He was one of the founders and original members of the United Presbyterian church of Brownsdale, and throughout his long life contributed liberally toward the support of that congregation.

His early life was spent on his father's farm and attending school in the winter time. Later he worked in Allegheny during the day and attended night school, and received a good English education. He was a great student of the Bible, and was considered one of the leading teachers of same. He had a trained legal mind and was a great debater, especially on such important subjects as "The Slavery Problem," "State Rights," "Signs of the Times," and other political and church problems. He took an active part in politics, was nominated for county commissioner in 1878, but was defeated by sixty-three votes, along with the rest of his party, on account of the greenback movement. He held the office of school director for nine years, and was appointed by the county officials to form dividing lines of townships, in the southern part of Butler County. He was the first postmaster of Brownsdale Pennsylvania. He belonged to the Covenanter Church until the time of the formation of the United Presbyterian Church in 1858, and became a member at that time, and served as elder until his death. He was the owner of 225 acres of land in Butler County, and raised thoroughbred stock.
