He was a farmer of Mt. Pleasant Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he owned a valuable farm of 140 acres.
He went to school at what was called Sugar Hill in his boyhood, but the name was later changed, in honor of his father, to Fort Donaldson. He later went to Buffalo Academy, in Hopewell Township. After he returned home he assisted his father on the farm and continued to carry on farming until 1904, when he moved to Hickory. He served in every township office except justice of the peace and probably was the first notary public ever appointed in Mt. Pleasant Township. He was identified with the Democratic party.
