General Notes: Husband - Alexander Read


He located on the Mitchell farm, at a site on "The Ridges," in Lawrence Township (then Chinclacamoose)in Lawrence township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, in 1802.

He and his wife were both natives of Cecil County, Maryland, and settled at an early day (1794) in Penn's Valley, Centre County, Pennsylvania, whence they moved to a new home in Clearfield County in 1803.

He served in the Revolutionary Army as a member of Captain Richard Smith's Company of the Flying Camp, enrolled Oct. 15, 1776 (Md. Archives Vol. 18 PP. 647-8; Vol. 12 P. 352). Detailed information as to his particular services is lacking, but he was presumably engaged in the Brandywine campaign and with Washington's army at Valley Forge the fall and winter of 1777-1778.

He was familiarly known as "Red Alex."
