He and his brother Archibald were in the army at Black Rock, New York, in 1814, during the War of 1812.
The three brothers, John, Robert, and Archibald Curry, made several trips to New Orleans in flat-boats.
He was a volunteer in the War of 1812, and he received 160 acres of land in Kansas as a reward for his services in the war. He owned a farm of 148 acres in Hanover Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
