In his youth he was employed as a coal-weigher at the Bald Eagle mine by the Westmoreland Coal Company. In 1872 he entered the service of the Pennsylvania railroad as a fireman; was advanced to the position of locomotive engineer in 1879; and was an engineer in the passenger service beginning in 1887. He was unmarried as late as 1906 and resided in Irwin, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
