General Notes: Husband - Capt. William K. Lyle
For a number of years he engaged in farming and stock raising in Smith Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He served with gallantry in the Civil War and was captain of his company. He was active in public affairs in Washington County and for six years was superintendent of the Children's Home. In 1905 he retired to Crafton, Allegheny County.
His mother died when he was less than three years old, so he was reared in the various homes of his married sisters. While residing with Mrs. Louisa Lyle Gault at New Concord, Ohio, he attended Muskingum College. Later, he prospected in the West.
He entered the Union Army in 1861 as a Private in the First Missouri Volunteer Infantry and was promoted to Second Lieutenant. In 1863, he was commissioned a First Lieutenant of Company L, First Missouri Engineers, and was appointed Quartermaster. In 1864 he was made A. A. Q. M. of the Engineers Dept. of the Army of Tennessee. In this capacity he served on many important and arduous missions during Sherman's March to the Sea, and on through the Carolinas to Washington. He was promoted to Captain and was mustered out at St. Louis in 1865.
He married and then engaged in farming on the James Cooke farm in Smith Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Later he conducted a hardware store at Burgettstown. He was a staunch Republican and served a term as Superintendent of the Washington County Children's Home until his retirement in 1903. He spent the remainder of his life at Crafton, Pennsylvania, where his death occurred.
