He was reared in his native township until he was sixteen years of age, and was engaged in various occupations until 1879, when he settled on a farm, which he cleared and improved. He was in the Civil war, enlisting in August, 1861, in Company G, Eighty-third Pennsylvania Volunteers. He participated in all the engagements of the regiment, except Fredericksburg, and was honorably discharged after three years' service. He was a member of the G. A. R., and in politics was a Republican.
