General Notes: Husband - Dr. Joseph L. Cook

He was brought to America by his parents when two years old. He attended the township schools, which were of a very primitive kind at that time. During two winters he attended a select school. Adam Torrance then became his tutor and gave him special instruction in languages. He next attended Elders Ridge Academy. Upon leaving this institution he taught school for one year in Washington township and in 1850 entered Jefferson College at Canonsburg. He entered in the junior year and graduated in 1852. He then went south and taught in the select schools of Tennessee and Mississippi for about two years. At this time he began the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Richardson, of Greensburg, and in 1855 entered Jefferson Medical College, graduating in 1857. He settled in New Alexandria and continued in the practice of his profession until 1899, when failing health compelled him to retire.
Dr. Cook was an earnest member of the Presbyterian church, of which he was an elder. He was greatly interested in Sunday school work and served as superintendent of the Sunday school for a period of fifteen years. During five of these years it was necessary to wheel him into the Sunday school in his invalid's chair in order to enable him to conduct the services.
In politics Mr. Cook was a Republican. [HWC 1906 III, 122]

He was one of the founders of the [Westmoreland] County Medical Society, and a active member thereof.
