He also became a sturdy farmer and tilled the acres which had been cultivated by his father and grandfather. After the death of his father Samuel purchased the rights of the heirs and continued in possession of the old homestead in Hempfield township until
his death. Politically he was a supporter of the Republican party, but never sought or held office. For many years he and his wife were members of the old Congruity Presbyterian church, but later in life were identified with the First Presbyterian church of Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
