General Notes: Husband - David Clements Gourley

He received a good education in the public schools of his native township. Early in life he began farming, being associated with his father. In 1884 he bought a portion of the home farm, and in 1887 erected his own farmhouse. In 1889, in connection with general farming, he began to deal in live stock, which became an important department of his business. The farm contained one hundred and fifty acres and was styled the "Elmwood Farm," so called from the famous stately elm trees found thereon. This place had never been out of the Gourley family, and was a part of the original four hundred acres secured by the ancestor, John Gourley, the great-grandfather. Upon the death of his father David C. bought the property from the remaining heirs, and there he resided and conducted a thriving farm business. Mr. Gourley, following in the footsteps of his Presbyterian ancestors, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. In politics he was a Republican. In 1902 he was elected school director of Hempfield township, and was reelected in 1905. In 1903 he was secretary of the school board. Fraternally Mr. Gourley was a member of Philanthropy Lodge, No. 225, F. and A. M., of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and Greensburg Council, No. 44, R. A.
