General Notes: Husband - Shadrach Claywell
In 1825 he removed with his parents to Sangamon County, Illinois, and after remaining a short period there they removed to Tennessee, where his mother died. In 1831 the family returned to Kentucky, removing from thence two years later to Sangamon County. From there Shadrach Claywell went to St. Louis, then to Springfield, and later to Chicago, and was there when the treaty with the Indians was concluded. He drove a stage and carried mail for many months from Chicago to Blue Island, later to Dixon, and subsequently from Dixon to Dad Jo's Grove. He carried the first mail from Galena to Freeport, blazing his way with a hatchet as far as Burr Oak Grove. For some years following this he was engaged in lead mining, but this not proving successful, he purchased a farm in Woodbine township, on which he resided up to his death. He owned four hundred and twenty-two acres of valuable land at the time of his decease.
