He was born on the homestead farm in Clay township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, received a common school and academic education, and remained with his parents until their death. He followed teaching for several years, and was engaged in farming until 1893, in which year he retired from active business life. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church, at West Sunbury, and was a Republican in politics.
